Motivational Interviewing: An Evidence-based Practice for Older Adults

Given our aging population and the limited healthcare resources available, utilizing brief behavioral interventions with older adults (defined here as 50 and older) for prevention of and early intervention for harmful health behaviors is increasingly important. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is designed to work well with a broad range of individuals including older adults with health-related problems. This webinar will review the empirical evidence of utilization of MI with older adults across health behaviors, describe the shifting motivations that older adults may have across generations, identify the unique circumstances of substance use and related problems that may affect intervention, and present results from two recent studies on MI with older adults.. The webinar will discuss important insights derived from the research and clinical work that will help to enhance motivation and commitment to change in this population. Case material will be employed to enrich content covered in the presentation.
