Acceptance Commitment Therapy for Trauma: Shaping Paths to Healing

Despite what people who have experienced trauma often think, they are not broken. Skills like acceptance of feelings, defusion from thoughts, moving through the world as a dynamic self, and a focus on values and vitality help to provide a path toward healing and growth.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT – pronounced “act” like the verb) is a powerful tool for trauma work. Over the course of two days, we will discover together the depth of the model and its application for helping others lead a life that feels more purposeful amidst trauma history. We will look, from many angles, at how one’s learning history can shape experiences of danger and vigilance, and how changing one’s relationship to that learning history can provide a sense of freedom and liberation. This highly interactive training, with role plays, exercises, games, videos, and opportunities (if you wish) to work on current cases. On day 1 we will go deep into the ACT model, and on Day 2 we will focus on the three stages of trauma – particularly exposure – as well as integrating other trauma models such as Prolonged Exposure, EMDR, and Written Exposure Therapy.
